Meetings
I meet with people one-on-one or in groups, drawing on my background as a trained spiritual director and certified coach.
Whether we’re processing something unique to a person’s life, exploring vocation, pursuing rest, or learning how to hear and enjoy God, my emphasis is always on an active, loving, two-way relationship with God in the midst of it.
Spiritual Direction
My favorite description of spiritual direction is borrowed from William Barry and William Connolly. They talk of spiritual direction as one person helping another to . . .
. . . pay attention to God’s personal communication,
. . . respond this personally communicating God,
. . . grow in intimacy with this God, and then
. . . live out the consequences of that relationship.
When I first read their description, I thought, Yes! That sums up exactly what I get to do with people.”
When we meet together, we’ll slow down and take a step back from daily life. In that quieted-down space, I’ll provide a place for you to explore what is happening under the surface of your life, and how you are (or aren’t) experiencing God in it. We’ll listen to your heart’s questions and desire, open up deeper spaces for you to explore, and bring all of that into God and hear His heart about it.
Over time, this quiet, deepening conversation provides a way for you to explore what it means to live daily life with this loving, challenging, present, kind — and yet often mysterious — God.
Personal Coaching for Life with God
When I meet with someone to coach them in connecting with and hearing God, we start with where they are with God: How have they known Him? How do they usually hear Him (if they do), and where would they like to go? Then we’ll draw on practices, prayers, and experiences from the LIFE with God pathway in order to show them how to move into a more loving, interactive, personal relationship with God. At times, I’ll bring in other materials or customize practices to meet a person’s specific needs.
If you work through this coaching with me, you’ll want to be ready to spend time with God on your own between meetings — perhaps you’ll have questions to discuss with Him, something of your heart to open up to Him, or a new practice to begin to do with Him. In meetings, we’ll talk about what you’re hearing, process barriers you’re experiencing, discern together, and open up space to hear God personally.
